When you get older...

I am a 70 year old female who was diagnosed at 19 with psoriasis but I am also a diabetic. I find the 2 conditions can feed each other and also I just get so tired of them both. I live alone and find it hard to examine my scalp myself and when I go to the hairstylist they politely say that they do not see anything! Recently I had a "Britney" moment and told the stylist to shave it all off. (It is just as bad only now I am bald) I have adult children and grandchildren who I will go to see on Easter. I am super embarrassed of the whole situation and feel like not going!

  1. It makes sense that you’d feel tired of it all, . Carrying psoriasis and diabetes for so many years is not an easy journey. But I just want to say, please don’t let this take away something as special as time with your children and grandchildren. They care about you, not your hair or your scalp. I know having things change about yourself can take a hit at your confidence and how you feel. But you showing up matters so much more than how you appear. You deserve to feel comfortable and supported, and you deserve those moments of joy with your family. I really hope you still go and let yourself be surrounded by that love 🧡 -Latoya (Team Member)

    1. I hate to hear that, but it sounds like you made the right call stepping away early. Sometimes protecting your peace matters more than staying in an environment that doesn’t feel good. And that “just wash more” comment is probably coming from a place where people don't have a full understanding of the condition. So don't take it too personal. I hope things start to feel a bit easier for you soon and you’re able to find more understanding and comfort around you. You deserve it. Warmly, Latoya (Team Member)

    2. And we believe you, too. It frustrates me to no end that people make terrible judgements about others, especially about things they don't understand. I imagine based on what you've shared here that your family wouldn't be willing to read some articles about psoriasis, its nature and the fact that it's not a hygiene problem. But we're here for education and to bust stigmas, if the opportunity ever presents itself. If it doesn't, just know we support you. Hugs. -Melissa, team member
