Surprise!

I had eczema a a child and into my early twenties. Once in a while there would be a small spot on me but nothing to get upset about.

I stopped taking hormones about eighteen months ago. A year ago I began breaking out in patches of psoriasis on my arms, my face, my legs, buttocks. I saw a dermatologist and was put on creams and ointments. Nothing worked. I spoke with several doctors and asked if it could be the hormones holding the psoriasis at bay. They disagreed. I saw my GYN a month ago and he agreed that the hormones had helped hold back the psoriasis and arthritis. I'm seeing a new doctor and he has put me on methotrexate. It's helping but I'm losing hair and I have other annoying side effects. I recently had surgery on my left hand where they removed an arthritic bone and replaced it with a tendon from my arm. I don't know how to handle all this and I am so glad to be in touch with others. Thank you!

Hi LindaT! Sorry to hear about your psoriasis, it must have been a bit of a shock to have it pop up like that. That is very interesting about the hormones - I have been doing a bit of reading on this myself recently, it is fascinating! I'm sorry to read about the methotrexate side effects, is it having any effect on your psoriasis yet? It may be worth mentioning the side effects to your doctor as they may review your folic acid to try to help with these. Gosh the hand surgery sounds quite traumatic. I am not surprised that you are feeling a bit overwhelmed - you have a lot going on and it's a lot to take in. I hope you are recovering well from the surgery at least. I am so sorry for what you are going through, but I am really pleased that you have found us - I hope you will reach out any time you need support. We are here for you!! Hi LindaT, On top of the good information from CathyD, I just wanted see whether or not you are also taking Folic Acid. Folic Acid is often used in conjunction with methotrexate to counteract some to the side-effects, including hair loss.  Thank you RichardF. Yes, I am taking Folic Acid. My doctor prescribed that along with the Methotrexate. I also take Biotin 2,000 mg. and he told me to double it, which I have done. Good for the hair and nails. I just have to be patient (a virtue I'm low on).
