Home Remedies For Psoriasis

I’m over the moon right now. My uncle who left us over 40 years ago, told my mom that she should give me walnuts to help my psoriasis. He also suggested boiling the walnuts and bathing me in the liquid. Of course, she never tried it.

Right now, I am having the worst flare I have had in 20 years. I’m looking for natural remedies to calm my skin down. Well, lo and behold I came across several articles talking about how wonderful walnuts are for you. I had never heard this before except from my country uncle who lived on a farm.

Using natural remedies

You know, way back in the “old” days, they didn’t run to doctors every time they got a pain. They really lived off the earth. I remember my grandfather boiling bark off the trees to soothe my skin. There might be something to all this natural stuff. They all lived to be in their 80s and 90s and they never went to a doctor in their life.

I remember getting a cold one year and having a very bad psoriasis flare. They boiled some black tea, although I'm not sure where it came from because we didn’t have any tea bags. They would add a teaspoon full of liquor, hot water, and sugar. Vicks salve was rubbed on my chest, with a glob under my nose. I was told to go to bed and cover up tightly for the night. You would sweat all night long (that might be because we didn’t have air conditioning). I do remember the next day as feeling good as new and outside playing with the rest of the kids.

I remember Epsom salt being in our household since the beginning of time, but the weird thing is that it was used sparingly. You had to be in real pain to get the Epsom salt treatment. There was always baking soda around. I know from memory that a pinch was put in foods that were being baked but also added to bath water.

Now, we consult doctors more

Of course, now a day we always consult a doctor before trying anything new. We don’t want a home remedy to interfere with medications from our healthcare provider. So much has changed over the years and we want to make sure that our home remedies are safe for us now. We don’t want anything over-taxing our bodies and making our situation worse.

One home remedy that I do stick to too is good old fashion chicken soup, homemade of course. We grew up on beets and I hated them. My doctor told me that beets were a good source for me to lower my blood pressure.

I probably didn’t like them back in the day because number one, we had to go pick them out of the garden and that wasn’t fun at all. I have been trying different brands from the supermarket and have acquired a taste for them. Some are pretty good now. I’m not sure how healthy they are from the store, but at least I’m eating my beets now.

Are there any home remedies that you still remember from back in the day that you have incorporated into your daily living today? Please share.
