A New Mental Health Community
Whether you are newly diagnosed with psoriasis or have had it a long time like me it tends to take a toll on your mental health. In my case I battle anxiety now. When I was newly diagnosed, I battled depression. It would be something I would battle for at least 10 years into my journey with psoriasis.
At one point I got so depressed that I told my husband I would let him out of our marriage. I could not imagine him wanting to be with me. I didn’t like myself so how could he? The depression was about as bad as it could get. I am fortunate in that I have a husband that truly loves me and supports me. It is through his support that I was able to leave the depression behind. For many of us it is still a struggle.

View all responsesHow psoriasis changes the way we feel about ourselves
The feeling of not being worthy of love, of being rejected by those that claim to love you are powerful things that can make us very depressed. That is not even mentioning the way psoriasis makes us feel about ourselves. Let’s be honest. Psoriasis is ugly. At my worst I was 80% covered in plaque psoriasis. I felt ugly and looked worse. Honestly, I felt like my life was over. I am here to tell you that it is not. Having support has changed my way of thinking on that.
I know others that have psoriasis. They are strong and we support each other when it is necessary. Some of them have even went to counseling so that they can learn ways to cope with the depression. I considered it many times. There is nothing wrong with knowing you need extra help living with psoriasis.
A new community dedicated to mental health
PlaquePsoriasis.com's parent company, Health Union, just had their annual conference. It was revealed that they have created a new community dedicated to mental health. I felt that since we all deal with some form of depression or anxiety typically that this community needed to know about the mental health community. I believe if you scroll to the bottom of this page, you will see a complete list of the communities that Health Union has to offer. Any of the conditions that you see that you live with you can join those communities for free as well. If you deal with depression or anxiety, please take some time to investigate the Mental Health Community. I can guarantee you that even if others are living with another medical condition, you will still be able to find common ground when it comes to battling obstacles. Just in the sense that each of us are different we still connect because of psoriasis.
We all need extra help sometimes when living with psoriasis. I know I do. If there is something that can make that journey just a bit easier, then I am all for it. I myself will be checking out the Mental Health community. If you are struggling mentally, I implore you to take some time and check it out as well. If it is more severe there is nothing wrong with going to counseling or asking for help.
