Do You Remember When You Got Diagnosis With Psoriasis?

Well, I do. I was diagnosed in September 1964. The reason I remember this day so well is because it was my first day of school. I wasn't allowed to attend school that day because they thought I was contagious.

Do you remember when you got diagnosed? How did you feel? We would like to hear from you. Diane (Team Member)

  1. Oh , it makes me so sad to thing of little Diane being unable to attend school because of the psoriasis and these ignorant views. The first day of school is such a big deal anyway.

I actually can't remember when I was diagnosed - I don't have any memory without psoriasis or without a psoriasis diagnosis. I feel rather fortunate that I've never known any different, as I'm sure it's traumatic to have these symptoms appear suddenly. Do you recall how long you had symptoms before you were diagnosed? Or did they first appear on your first day of school?

This is a great topic and I'm very interested to hear others' experiences with diagnosis! Warmly, -Catherine, Community Moderator

    1. Hi , I have had psoriasis as far back as I can remember. I grew up poor, so my parents didn't take me to a doctor. I guess that's why the school stepped in. I was covered from head to toe. I was upset well into my adult life, but I understand now. This was 1963, people probably never heard of psoriasis. It's not like it is now, every other commercial is about PsO. This was not all bad for me. I got to finally see a doctor and get a diagnosis. The town I grew up in was so small that they had to call in a doctor from another town to see what I had. It's been a rough storm, but I have managed to get through it. Diane (Team Member)

    2. , you are such a strong woman 💕 I'm so glad that you were able to get a diagnosis from that doctor, and have a name for what was causing your symptoms. Do you remember the first treatments you tried? All I can remember about mine is that they stung so badly. It's a lot for a small child to deal with, isn't it? Hugs! -Catherine, Community Moderator

  2. Hello , I do remember my very 1st treatment at the hospital. It was light but like a table lamp. They would put parts of my body under this. You have no idea how many laughs I have had over the years thinking about this. While I was there with them experimenting on me, they tried what was called a "compound" back in the day. It was a cream that had the worst smell ever!! The things we have to go through in life. Diane (Team Member)

    1. , oh bless you. Treatments have come on such a long way over the years haven't they? I was actually prescribed a compound cream when I was around 10 years old (so mid-1990s). I hear you on the smell - they must have had coal tar in them... I wish I knew what else went into them! Warmly, -Catherine, Community Moderator

    2. Yes, it was coal tar. So many people pointed out how bad I smelled. Diane (Team Member)
