Do you have nail psoriasis?

Given that around half of people with psoriasis have symptoms that affect their nails in some way, and most people with psoriasis will have nail psoriasis symptoms at some point during their lifetime, I'm curious to know how many people here are dealing with nail psoriasis. For anyone curious, we have a great article which has a list of the different ways that psoriasis can impact the nails: https://plaquepsoriasis.com/clinical/pathogenesis-nail-psoriasis - there's also some really interesting information on how nail psoriasis develops.

Personally, I have experienced all but one of the symptoms listed - I've never had red spots in the lunula. The most distressing nail symptom I've dealt with has been onycholysis, where the nails detach from the nail bed. My pinkie finger nail was only attached by around 2mm at the base of the nail at one point. I know some people even completely lose the nail due to this particular symptom.

Has anyone else experienced symptoms of nail psoriasis? And is there anything that helps you manage these? We'd love to hear from you!

  1. Great forum topic . I have the lines running through my nails that are a usual indication of psoriatic arthritis I believe but not really any other symptoms. I have not lost any of my nails or had any of them detach in any way. I hope you get many responses to this subject. It will be interesting to see how many are affected by it. Vickie, Team Member

    1. my lines on my nails are all horizontal. I do not do anything for the ridges. Until it gets to a position of bothering me, I look at it as its not broke don't fix it. Vickie, Team Member

    2. , I love that way of looking at it! I take a similar approach - my nails never really bothered me until they started trying to fall off! I had pitting and ridges and salmon patches and all sorts before that. My nails actually changed from the pitting to the onycholysis when my psoriatic arthritis symptoms developed, and my toe nails started to get a mysterious "fungal infection" that didn't respond to any treatment. Spoiler alert: my nails weren't fungal, they were psoriatic! They're not wrong when they say nail changes are a sign of/risk factor for psoriatic arthritis. Really appreciate you chiming in here, Vickie! Warmly, -Catherine, Community Moderator
