When Sleeping Problems Become A Plus

Most people with psoriasis live with sleeping issues, mainly the lack of it. I am one of those people. If memory serves me right before having psoriasis I usually never had a problem going to sleep or staying asleep. There was never a time that I had to take anything to make me sleep through the night. Boy if I could only say that now.

The positive benefits of sleep deprivation with psoriasis

Now it takes different types of medicine to help me sleep, as well as ease the itch and pain my body goes through at night. When there is a night that I happen to miss my medication, I can tell. The sleep is hard to come by.

Let's not even talk about the itching which is relentless. There again I'm sure I am preaching to the choir. I never thought there would come a time when the sleep deprivation would come in handy.

The gift of sleep deprivation

My son and daughter-in-law just had a precious baby girl. I have been staying with them for two weeks now so that I can help the new parents with any questions they have. I can also show them any tricks I learned as a mother. One of the things I wanted to help my daughter with is allowing her the chance to sleep to regain her strength. This is where the sleep problem came in handy for me.

The first night they came home from the hospital our little bundle of joy was so fussy. Her mother was trying to breastfeed. Apparently she was not producing enough. That night made for a really long one. Since I had not been sleeping well I was able to stay up with my granddaughter and give my children time to sleep.

Sleep medications with psoriasis have not helped

As I said, sleep has been a problem since my psoriasis diagnosis. The itching was so insane that even when I could sleep, I was still scratching. I wish researchers could find a reason why the sleep becomes so interrupted but I digress. Even with medication I still have nights that I cannot sleep.

The day my granddaughter was born, her mother had been in labor for twelve hours. That means we had been up all night. I had taken my medication that night before. Yet, I was not once-sleepy. Even being up all day when she was born, I never once felt sleepy.

You could probably say I was too excited about the new arrival. I would argue that being in my late 40's being up twenty-four hours would make most people my age wiped out.

Thankful for sleep deprivation and psoriasis

In sixteen years of living with psoriasis and dealing with little to no sleep, I never thought it would be beneficial. I have been fortunate at least twice in the last two weeks to turn a lack of sleep into something positive.

The first was the night when my daughter went into labor. The second was the night I was able to get up with their newborn to feed her and give my children the gift of sleep. It has been the only two times I can say that being sleep deprived worked in my favor.
