Is It Nail Psoriasis Or Nail Fungus?

I have had nail psoriasis ever since I can remember, decades now. The first time I went to the doctor for this, they told me I had nail fungus. They gave me some cream and sent me on my merry way.

Long story short, the psoriasis started growing under the nails and pushing them up. It was the worst pain I can ever remember having. I went back to the doctor and was given a few injections which helped a lot. I was told that this would fix my nail psoriasis.

Well, it's been 60 years of having nail psoriasis. I tried getting those acrylic nails, but that was another big mistake.

In today's world, I just keep my nails nice and short. I still have the lines, ridges, discoloration, dents, and grooves. It doesn't bother me anymore. I haven't had any infections in years.

Have you ever developed nail psoriasis? If so, what treatment plan did you use, if any?

We would love to hear from you.

  1. , this is a great topic! I know we've heard from many community members whose nail psoriasis has initially been misdiagnosed as a fungal nail infection. I'm actually one of those people! I used a fungal nail treatment on my toenails for years before realising that my toenails were actually affected by psoriasis, and this was one of the first signs of psoriatic arthritis. My finger nails were pretty quickly diagnosed as psoriasis, as far as I can remember. They were lifting from the nail bed and I also had ridges, pitting and salmon patches. For my finger nails, I actually ended up using my liquid scalp treatment (calcipotriol) and dropping it behind/under my nails. It made a big difference, although it took around nine months for my nails reach the full extent of the improvement. My dermatologist was very impressed with the results and said he would recommend this to his patients going forward! I have never had injections in my nails - were they very painful?

For anyone curious, here's an article which looks at the differences between nail psoriasis and nail fungus: https://plaquepsoriasis.com/clinical/nail-psoriasis-versus-fungus -Catherine, Community Moderator

    1. Hello , I don't remember it hurting at all. It helped with the psoriasis going away under the nails. But 60 years later I still have the lines, ridges, dents, and grooves. It used to bother me, but not anymore. Thanks for chiming in. I'm sure somewhere in our future a cure is coming.
