Is There A Surgery That Can Be Done To Treat Psoriasis?

Well, there is. It is called dermabrasion. I had never heard of this, but this is something that is used to remove the outer skin layer. This sounds very painful. But the idea behind this is that when the skin grows back it will be psoriasis free.

Has anyone ever heard of this before? I hadn't. I would like to hear from you. Diane (Team Member)

  1. Hi , this is so interesting! I haven't had dermabrasion but I did have one session of microdermabrasion on my face, which I believe removes dead skin cells. I only had one session because it may have triggered psoriasis on my face. I do struggle with the Koebner phenomenon (here's some further information for anyone interested: https://plaquepsoriasis.com/living/koebner-phenomenon), so that may explain that, or it could have just been a coincidence! Do you think you would ever give dermabrasion a try, Diane? Warmly, -Catherine, Community Moderator

    1. Never!! Never!!! Never!!! 😀 I just can't see damaging my skin even more. Not a chance I would want to take. We go through so much with our skin. I wouldn't want to wake up anything.

    2. , I have to say, I feel exactly the same way. From what I've read, dermabrasion sounds like a pretty aggressive treatment, and knowing how my psoriasis responds to skin injury just makes it even more unappealing. I am curious to know if we have any community members who have had this done though! Warmly, -Catherine, Community Moderator

  2. I did some research and surgery is no longer considered an effective psoriasis treatment. It doesn't address the underlying chronic autoimmune condition. However, other treatments can help manage psoriasis symptoms. Diane (Team Member)

    1. , I did notice that the studies I found on dermabrasion and psoriasis seemed to be mostly from the 1990s! I imagine (and would hope) that knowledge of psoriasis and its autoimmune nature has come on quite a way since then. Thanks so much for the update, Diane! Warmly, -Catherine, Community Moderator
