Taking a Break From Psoriasis

I have had psoriasis and mild psoriatic arthritis for 13 years. I know without a doubt that there is no cure. There are heaps of way to manage and we all find ways and tricks to helps us through flares.

Tips to find relief from psoriasis

So with all of this being what it is, I know that my psoriasis is here to stay. Years ago, I made peace with this fact so, along the way, I have found ways to make me simply feel better.

Be it a simple moment to feel better and soothe the itching and the pain levels. I've shared them with you here.

Bath soaks

These might be my most favorite things. Finding the perfect combination is always tricky as my skin can be pretty indecisive. My most commonly used products are: Epsom salts, tepid water, and aromatherapy oils. Rosemary and tea tree might be my most used.

Aromatherapy oils should always be used carefully, people often underestimate how strong it can be. Do a test and be sure to be safe. But for those moments with the temperature just right and the scents drifting through the air, my mind can switch off if only for a while.

Important note: I am always sure to moisturize really well after.

Scalp relief

This I found totally by accident: a peppermint infused conditioner. This brought me some much-needed relief from the itch. Surprisingly enough it lasted some time too.

I found a great product in my local stores which is a leave-in conditioner that I left on for 30 minutes washed out in a tepid warm shower. It possibly lasted for 2 days a cool and soothing feeling, less itchy.

Important note: It might mess up your hair color, mine lost some effect after the treatment was done.

Cat naps

An afternoon nap can leave me rested and feeling better in as little as one hour. While I struggle with a full night’s sleep, short naps are a winner in my books. Short enough to just boost my energy levels if only slightly.

For some reason since becoming an adult, they are still a favorite. These days as a single mum they are a little more challenging, but I tell you what if my mom is willing to watch her, which she often is, I am quick to duck under my duvet.

Movie night

Lock yourself indoors, switch your phones off, draw the curtains. With some freshly popped popcorn or snack of your choice, fly off into a fantasy world. Allow your mind to switch off and step into space where your current situation takes a back seat if only for a while.

I go the whole ten yards, a throw a cotton sheet over my couch so that my skin does not itch. In winter there is always a soft blanket nearby to warm my toes.
