The Heartbreak Of Scalp Psoriasis

I have had scalp psoriasis since 1963. My head was shaved at the age of 5 because of severe scalp psoriasis. I have had to shave my head 3 times since then.

Over this time period, my scalp used to flare really badly in the winter months and clear up in the summer.

But in the last several years it seems to be year-round. I have a great collection of wigs now.

Does your scalp psoriasis flare at different seasons or do you have it year round? We would like to hear from you.

  1. , scalp psoriasis certainly is persistent, isn't it?! I've had scalp psoriasis since I was a young child too. It was very severe when I was younger but it's not too bad these days. I do have it year-round though. One thing I notice is it seems to be particularly itchy and flaky when the seasons are changing. It also seems to flake more during winter. How has your scalp psoriasis been lately, Diane? Hugs! -Catherine, Community Moderator

    1. , oh bless you! Yes, if a style cost that much money I would certainly want to keep it for as long as possible too. I bet it looks gorgeous! I'm sorry you're suffering so much though 😢 I genuinely think there's no itch that's comparable to a scalp psoriasis itch ! I wonder if you could find an oil with peppermint in? I've heard lots of people say that peppermint products feel very cooling and help relieve the itch.

My hair washing is a bit complicated because of the fatigue I have with my psoriatic arthritis - I only wash my hair once a week. It probably should be washed every 4 or 5 days, so I just wait out the last few days with greasy hair 😅 I do find that when I wash my hair it kind of exfoliates the scalp psoriasis away, and nowadays it does take a few days to build up again. I remember when I was a child, the scalp psoriasis would only take one night to get back to how it was pre-wash. My mum used to comb it all out with a lice comb and then it would be back the next day. It's crazy how quickly it can build up when it's severe.

Sending the biggest hug to you, Diane. Hoping this flare calms down for you very soon! -Catherine, Community Moderator

    2. Hello , I would rather use an oil than an oil sheen. She has them so close to my scalp that I have to use a spray. All I have to say is - poor Stevie. I had to take aspirin for 3 days. I did call my stylist about putting oil on my scalp. She knows I have psoriasis. Do you do any type of protective styles?
