My Daughter

Psoriasis first turned up on my daughter at the age of four. I believe it was on the side of her face.

From there it has generally spread to both sides of her face and her scalp. We have gone through several creams and lotions shampoos. T-gel I believe worked well and we can't find that anymore and her ears are bad.

She then got strep throat and her back and her neck and her chest broke out with all these red scabby dots. We've been taking her for the light therapy which is clearing it up but how hard is that on an 11-year-old girl?

Is there nothing that can make her life easier because I'm at my wit's head with with this?

I've had psoriasis since I was very young too, so I can relate from your daughter's point of view. How is she coping with everything? It's good to hear that the light therapy is helping. I had UVB phototherapy for a flare of guttate psoriasis (https://plaquepsoriasis.com/types-severity/guttate-psoriasis - strep throat is a common trigger for this type of psoriasis) and found it to be very effective. I hope the same for your daughter! When I had my sessions I was in my twenties, but there was a young girl who went every week too and she seemed to be doing well. Personally speaking, the light therapy was certainly less hard on my body than both applying topical creams constantly and taking a systemic medication, but we're all different. On the topic of T/Gel - it appears to have been discontinued in the US. I was asking about this recently and got a couple of recommendations for alternatives from the community: <a href='https://plaquepsoriasis.com/forums/has-t-gel-been-discontinued' target='_blank'>https://plaquepsoriasis.com/forums/has-t-gel-been-discontinued</a> Perhaps there might be another shampoo that your daughter will find helpful. Watching your child struggle with something like psoriasis is heartbreaking, especially when you’ve tried so many treatments and are still searching for answers. I can only imagine how hard it must be for an 11-year-old girl to deal with this, and it’s completely understandable to feel at your wit’s end. It sounds like you're doing everything you can, and I truly hope the light therapy continues to help. Thank you for asking this question. i also have an almost 11 year old. Anytime she gets sick she breaks out on her skin. Fresh made aloe vera gel helps her scalp. strep throat makes her breakout on her back and her legs. I am at a lost on what to do for her.

I really feel for you as parents. Here's some information on psoriasis in children and teens which I thought might be of interest: <a href='https://plaquepsoriasis.com/psoriasis-affect-health/baby-children-teens-age' target='_blank'>https://plaquepsoriasis.com/psoriasis-affect-health/baby-children-teens-age</a> Unfortunately, throat infections can be a huge trigger for psoriasis (they certainly are for me). Is your daughter seeing a dermatologist? Whilst it's horrible that children have to cope with this disease, treatments have come such a long way since I was growing up with psoriasis.  <inline-mention username="CommunityMember72a32e" user-id="9854754"/> , It's hard when we as children get this disease. I got severe psoriasis at 5 years old. I was covered over 80% of my body. That was 61 years ago. I am so sorry you both have to deal with this. I'm just happy to see that she has a parent that is advocating for here. There are so many treatments out there now. Are you seeing a dermatologist? Some treatments you have to be careful with. We are here if you need us. One of the biggest thing I have learned on this journey was that I wasn't alone. <inline-mention username="CommunityMember1dea41" user-id="9796904"/> , I am so sorry you are going through this. I got psoriasis at 5 years old. I am now 66. I had a very severe case, but that's another story. T-gel is hard to get. Have you checked out Amazon? They did have it. Is your dermatologist suggesting anything else besides light treatment? There are so many things out now for psoriasis such as corticosteroids, non-steroidal topical medications, tar treatments and more. You just have to be careful with these, so it's best to check with your healthcare provider before you start anything new. The one thing that helped me the most over these last 61 years with this disease was always hearing my mom's voice in my ear telling me how beautiful and special I was when I was 80% covered. At 11, your daughter is not going to understand how powerful your presence will be to her. You hang in there and keep advocating for her. We are here if you need us. Diane (Team Member)
